The one subject that makes confident leaders go quiet
From Kristy McCann
Former CHRO & CEO, SkillCycle
The BBP team went back through 374 conversations with people-leaders (a couple of them mine) and listened for how we actually sound when the subject turns to change. When they showed me the numbers, I wasn’t surprised for a second. Take the 2-minute quiz below, and I’ll show you why.
2-minute quiz
What kind of change leader are you?
- 01Your type, and the one move to make Monday.
- 02Three podcast episodes matched to your blind spot.
- 03Tell me what you’re actually dealing with, and I’ll weigh in on it, personally.
Here’s what got me. When we talk about anything else (culture, hiring, strategy) we’re optimistic about a third of the time. The second it’s change, we don’t turn negative. We turn careful. We go quiet.

“There’s no change unless you bring your people along — and everyone’s quietly asking: what’s in it for me?”
What the 374 actually talk about
A people problem, not a process problem
Culture and communication run away with it. Crisis and layoffs, the stuff most “change management” content fixates on, sit at the bottom. The people who’ve actually done this don’t project-manage change. They bring people along. I learned that the hard way.
The closer
Reframe, or refrain
So how do I decide which changes are even worth making? Before I kick anything off, I ask one thing: what is this actually for? Does it serve the greater good across every stakeholder: the CEO, the strategy, investors, customers, and the employees? If it checks those boxes, go. If it doesn’t, reframe it, or refrain.
“Look at these AI layoffs right now — they don’t benefit customers, they don’t benefit employees, they don’t benefit the bottom line. And that domino effect doesn’t disappear in a day just because the employees did. It lasts for years.”
