The Growing AI Divide in Internal Communication
February 16, 2026 · All Things IC

-
81% of IC practitioners feel optimistic about AI, but a sharp maturity gap is emerging: 41% are "AI Leaders" using AI for strategy, planning, and research (saving half a day per week), while 20% are "AI Beginners" who barely use it at all.
-
AI Leaders work with more specialized tools and apply AI to higher-order tasks beyond content creation, yet 62% of all IC teams have received no formal AI training and only 21% have an AI strategy with governance in place—creating an urgent skills gap.
-
The expectation gap is widening: AI Leaders are four times more likely to believe IC won't exist in its current form within five years and twice as likely to see the need for strategic partnerships with HR (who own people data) and IT (who enable permissions and governance).
